ABOUT THE RESTAURANT

When César Ritz opened his latest hotel at the northern tip of Green Park in 1906, it bade fair to become one of the capital's most opulent lodgings, and so it would remain, from the Entente Cordiale to Cool Britannia. At its heart is the stunningly beautiful dining room, lined with French windows along the park side, topped with a ceiling fresco of sunlit clouds, overseen by a gilded statue of a reclining Poseidon. Many of the principles of the haute cuisine of yesteryear live on in John Williams' renditions of classics like Dover sole véronique, veal fillet with asparagus, wild garlic and Madeira, or the Mont Blanc dessert with its chestnut and rum ice cream. There are more contemporary dishes, too, and full vegan and vegetarian menus. Even if you don't opt for the crêpes suzette, hand-flamed by the maître d' at your table, you've got to hope somebody nearby does.
